Who I am...
Born in North Carolina in 1973, I was raised by a single mom who sang feminist anthems instead of lullabies and encouraged free thinking. Ever the outsider in a sleepy southern town, I excelled at flying under the radar. Growing up writing the things I couldn't say became an outlet and a salve. In college I dabbled in writing for the school paper but felt confined by the structure. I eventually created and published a community newsletter of events and human-interest articles. The exhilaration of writing for an audience on topics I care about planted the seeds for what I do today.
What I do...
It wasn't until after I had a family that I began writing again, blogging and publishing in national outlets. Social justice, family, and the grief of losing my younger brother to pediatric cancer were the driving force behind my writing. My article on everyday sexism was published internationally in six different languages, trade publications, and even in some college course syllabi, right before the #MeToo movement became a global phenomenon. After that I joined the Good Men Project as a regular contributor and the co-leader of their Stop Sexism podcast and social interest group. I started a local non-profit to address inequities in my community and teach children and parents how to be advocates for social justice, wrote for a handful of anthologies, and am currently working on my first novel. My activism and passion for social justice fuel my writing and storytelling.
